	About the English Department The English Department intends to improve our pupils' performance in the following skills: Reading. For understanding and enjoyment of literature and non-fictional texts (novels, stories, prose extracts, poems, plays, etc.) and for information (books of reference, instructions, non-fiction, etc.). Writing. Creative Writing (stories, scripts, poems, travel writing, presenting ideas and arguments, personal writing). Writing for practical purposes (conveying information, notes, letters, forms, etc.). Analysis and critical evaluation of reading. Listening & Viewing. For understanding and enjoyment (stories, plays, poems - directly or via the media of radio, T.V. and film) and for information, as part of discussion (ideas, feelings, argument). Talking. To convey information, experience, tell stories and to convey ideas, attitudes, feelings as part of discussion (interviews, committee skills). Teachers and pupils work together to develop linguistic competence and confidence. Thus we hope to promote not only language skills but a growing social and personal awareness. Whatever the chosen field and career options of the pupils will be in their later lives, the knowledge of the English language is essential in many areas. Knowing one or two modern languages makes the possibility of working abroad much more accessible and increases job prospects at home.
